Ielts exam tips - Vocabulary Enhancement exercise - Ielts tips

Vocabulary Enhancement exercise

To enhance the practical vocabulary we need to grab the words from the primary sources. Dictionary can only help as a secondary and a reference source. We need to understand the usage and application of words. But without the contextual meaning it is very hard to get to terms of usage. Every word has a unique use in a sentence and the context it is being quoted. For e.g.

I am wondering what would happen if fossil fuel resources dry out, how would we run our cars.
In this case   wonder has been used as a verb and it means To be filled with curiosity or doubt.

She wondered at the creation of god i.e. how the new born child became a fully grown individual one day
Here also wonder has been used a verb but it means To have a feeling of awe or admiration; marvel

The development of new mobile technology is a 21st century wonder.
Here wonder is a noun and it means a miracle

The outstanding performance of winning team is a wonder for rival teams
Here also wonder is a noun and it means: One that arouses awe, astonishment, surprise, or admiration; a marvel

Wonder can also appear as wonderful i.e. adjective i.e. the promotion has been a wonderful  achievement for me this year
The logic is simple
Every word can have different meanings an without linking them to practical use dictionary cannot be of any help. Its as simple as possessing a gun but not knowing how to take an aim.
So it is important to read through a lot of practical sources to really get a grab of words and thus enhance vocabulary.
